Seniors: Don't Forget to Complete Community Service Hours!
By: Danny Crouse
To graduate, the 2016 students need to complete at least five hours of community service to receive their diploma.
Senior Bree Nickols has indeed completed all of her community service hours. Bree coached T-Ball and Little League for four years and says she loves working with the kids.
Senior Tyler Stimmel has also completed his service hours. Tyler is counting the hours from his eagle scout project for his community service. For his eagle scout project, he built benches in the NB athletic building locker rooms.
Community service teaches the seniors to respect and honor other people and these two students have gone above and beyond what was expected of them.

Eagle Scout Project
By: Tyler Stimmel - March 18, 2016
Community service is an activity that occurs in every town. It is why my places have the features they have today. North Baltimore is a community that is no different.
I finished my Eagle Scout project for the North Baltimore High School this year. This project involved a lot of help and a lot of time. The locker room benches in the athletic building were built for this project. It was also so fun for everyone to work on. “It was really fun and awesome to work on this project. It was especially great to see my son finish his Eagle Scout project,” said Dan Stimmel.
The project took around five months to complete. D.S Brown donated all of the legs for the benches, and Ron Bean donated wood from the old school to be used for the actual bench.
“The finished project was awesome! It was worth all of the long hours and the hard work and the benches will be used for many years to come. I am glad I was a part of it,” said Brenda Stimmel.
This project meant a lot to me, and I know it meant a lot to the school and everyone who will use those locker rooms. I know community service is a very important aspect of society, and this project will definitely not be the last one completed.

Helping the Elderly

Have you always wanted to help people and care for the sick or injured but hate nursing homes and hospitals? For years I hated nursing homes and hospitals, until my grandmother was admitted three years ago. Nursing homes and hospitals have always made me uneasy from the smell of bleach to the stuffy corridors. However, I overcame this by volunteering at my local nursing home Briar Hill for my five community service hours. I chose this as my community service because I want to help people. Linda Newlon, the head of Life Enrichment, assigned me to activities. I am to prepare and set up interactive games for the residents. I found that I enjoyed spending time with the residents and noticed how happy they were when we prepared new activities for them. I believe community service is important because it shows you an insight about what life is about and gives you experience. Getting involved in community service provides students with opportunities to become active in the community and experience different things. Community service helps students learn to be independent and not always rely on others.
To learn more about the opportunities students can gain I interviewed, Linda Newlon, the head of Life Enrichment at Briar Hill Nursing Home stated, “Overall, people have a very negative stereotype of nursing homes, however they don’t realize the joy that comes out of making the residents laugh and to see them enjoying themselves. Students can recognize the impact that they can have on residents. Another lesson they usually learn is how to examine the roles and responsibilities of the staff members.”
I also interviewed Jen Fackler, a co-worker of Linda Newlon’s who also works in Life Enrichment. She was interviewed on what volunteers normally do and she responded quickly, “One of the things most volunteers do is reach out to someone in the assisted living facility and share quality time together.” It is highly recommended that whether you’re visiting a family member, friend, or neighbor, make the most of your visit because they really look forward to the company.
Even if you don’t have a parent or grandparent to care for, there are plenty of seniors at the nursing home to care for and who could use the company. There are plenty activities that can put your interest and skills but also keep the residents involved. Volunteering at a nursing home is great for someone who is is outgoing. Even if you’re not outgoing you will warm up to the residents and enjoy your time spent their. I am glad I chose to put my time and effort into working at Briar Hill. I loved the experience and the environment so much I put in over fifty hours there.
All in all, community service at the nursing home influenced me to go into the medical field because I enjoy helping people. I also loved the environment and the atmosphere. Everyone was so kind and I learned how to be more independent and talked to multiple residents. I kept lots of residents involved in multiple activities and games that they seemed to enjoy. It brings people together by uniting people from diverse background to work towards one common goal. Community service not only gives you experience but it also encourages responsibility.

Community Service Opportunities
By: Morgan Rose - March 18, 2016
Morgan Rose, a senior in high school worked over 70 hours for the North Baltimore Little League last spring/summer. She spent most of her time working the concession stands with the president of the Little League, Mickey Rockhill. She also put numerous hours into making everything look presentable once again, such as painting picnic tables around the fields and painting the concession stand. By doing this, they made money for the Little League to buy the kids trophies at the end of the year. Have you ever thought about doing anything beneficial for your community?
When Morgan worked concessions, she worked for three hours and did it twice a week, Tuesday and Thursday nights. Games started around 6:00 pm and she was usually there helping Mickey clean everything up until around 9:00 pm. “It was for a good cause and we got bonding time in while doing it,” said Mickey in an interview.
At the beginning of the Little League season, the concessions needed painted along with the various picnic tables that were scattered around, and near the baseball fields. Morgan, her mom, and Mickey took five hours out of their day one Saturday and spent their time painting the concession stand, and the picnic tables making it look presentable. “It was a long process, but everything looked much nicer when it was completely done. It was well worth the time and effort put into it,” Tracy Rose stated.
A little hard work and dedication always end up paying off in the end. It goes a long way and can truly teach a person a lot. It teaches responsibility, and it’s proven that if people work hard for others, they will do well when it comes to being out in the real world on their own.
