MLB Opening Day
By: Tyler Schwartz - April 15, 2016
The smell of fresh cut grass, the brisk spring breeze, the snap of leather, and the crack of the bat. Popcorn and hotdogs become your daily meal, with sunflower seeds as an appetizer. The birds are singing and the weather breaking, it’s spring which means one thing: baseball. High school baseball teams have started their season off, battling the cold and collegiate baseball has begun its season as well. The MLB had its opening day on this Monday, April 4. Let’s take a quick look back at opening day 2016.
Mother Nature must have been mad at the Baseball Gods on Monday because the weather was atrocious. The weather was bad enough, in fact, that the Indians/Red Sox game was postponed as was the Yankees/Astros game. Even though the weather was terrible many teams did play. This year’s World Series favorite Cubs shut out the Angels nine to zero. The Orioles screeched by the Twins beating them three to two. The Rangers and Mariners mirrored the Orioles/Twins, with the Rangers beating the Mariners three to two. Our friends from Canada won their game with the Blue Jays beating the Rays five to two. The Oakland A’s battled hard but ended up falling to the White Sox three to four. Hopping over to the National League, Buster Posey and the Giants handed it to the Brewers, beating them twelve to three. The Nationals beat the Braves in a good game, with the final being three to four. The Reds opened their season beating the Phillies six to two. The Padres got straight up embarrassed by LA, with the Dodgers winning fifteen to nothing. Finally, the Rockies rocked the Diamondbacks with a ten to five victory. Indians fan Eli Smith, quoted that “There have been a lot of good games so far this season, but I am a little upset that my team is only .500”.
So, it looks like we are going to see an interesting season of America’s Pastime this year. Be sure to keep up on scores with ESPN. May you rep your team all the way to the World Series! Good luck and cheers to baseball!

Cedar Point Opening Soon!
By: Taylor Kelley - April 2, 2016
Cedar Point opens May 7th, from 10 A.M to 10 P.M. It’s the first day of the year and is going to be a great way to spend quality time with your family. There are plenty of rides to get on, a total of 72 to be specific. Even if you’re not a big ride person, there are many things to do there. If you have kids you can take them to Snoopy Land and get on the baby rides with them or even just watch over them. There are also a lot of fair rides that aren’t roller coasters and tons of games on the side that you run into walking throughout the park.
The park is a great way to get out of the house and spend some time with friends or family. For example, if you lived in North Baltimore and you wanted to spend a day away, you could drive up to Sandusky in the morning and plan a day to go to Cedar Point or even maybe to Soak City, which is also part of Cedar Point. Soak City is the waterpark side of the park; it has a whole pool and a lot of water slides. So even if you don’t like rides, you could take your kids to Cedar Point, and you could go spend a day relaxing at a water park.
Cedar Point is an all around a great place to go to during the summer; there are tons of things to do, and it's always a great place to go to if you need some thrill in your life. You should definitely think about going to visit one day this summer!

March Madness
By: Tyler Schwartz - March 24, 2016
Fans hustling to finish their bracket, highlight videos all over TV, buzzer beaters, and people crying because their bracket just got shattered! It’s time for March Madness, close to a whole month of insanity that every sports fan loves. Selection Sunday has come and gone and the race to the NCAA championship is underway! The bracket for this year’s tournament is set as follows:
Many people have projected Kansas to win the tournament, but Michigan State is sure to put up a fight. With all one and two seed teams being power houses, this should be one interesting tournament.
Update as of Tuesday, March 22
There are sixteen teams remaining, with the sweet sixteen round beginning this Thursday. All number one teams are still alive! The teams remaining are the following: Duke, Gonzaga, Indiana, Iowa State, Kansas, Maryland, Miami, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oregon, Syracuse, Texas A&M, Villanova, Virginia, and Wisconsin. The tournament so far has been defined by upset after upset, upsets that some of which are so crazy they are almost unbelieveable. Some of the biggest upsets have been Stephen F. Austin upsetting West Virginia, Middle Tennessee upsetting Michigan State whom was thought to possibly win the tournament, Hawaii upsetting Cal, UALR upsetting Purdue in overtime, and Yale upsetting Baylor. Some highlights of the tournament have included Wisconsin beating Xavier with a buzzer beater three and probably the biggest and best highlight of all, Northern Iowa hitting a halfcourt buzzer beater to upset Texas. Freshman and basketball player/enthusiast Olivia Hyatt went as far as saying that “This has been the biggest upset year in the history of March Madness. No one was expecting Michigan State to lose first round.” Fellow basketball enthusiast and North Baltimore English teacher and Michigan fan, Ms. Huffman, claims that “Michigan got robbed!”
March Madness has definitely lived up to its name this year and is sure to throw many more upsets and thrills our way. Keep watching March Madness on TBS, TNT, CBS and TRUTV! May the madness continue and may your bracket not get busted!

Vasco da Gama’s Ship Possibly Found
By: Dominick Runyon - March 24, 2016
It is the early 16th century, explorers make their wealth by traveling the sea for their country. Many, like famous Vasco da Gama, made amazing accomplishments. Vasco da Gama is the first person ever to sail from Europe to India. Da Gama was mostly famous for his accomplishment with India, but historians have also recorded a more gruesome story behind Vasco da Gama. Acting in favor of the king of Portugal at the time, was order to maintain Portugal's dominance in the region, this often meant that Vasco da Gama terrorized Muslim towns and merchant ships. One time burning a Muslim merchant ship, killing everyone on board.
During Vasco da Gama’s second trip to India, it is believed that the crew went into a storm that destroyed the Esmeralda, a ship under da Gama’s control. Researchers in the Al Hallaniyah Island in the Arabian Sea found a ship wreckage in 1998, and many more excavations have been conducted over the past three years. Many researchers believe the shipwreck is the wreck of the lost Esmeralda ship. According to the researchers, the site of the wreck is a perfect geographical match for where the ship crashed. FIndings of rare coins in the area also lead researchers to think it is the Esmeralda. It is still uncertain if the wreck is in fact the Esmeralda, but many people are convinced it is.

Oscar Overview
By: Tyler Schwartz - March 11, 2016
Two things define the last Sunday of February, the shining of bright lights on the red carpet and the phrase, ‘Thank you to the academy!’ being said continuously, as actors, actresses, filmmakers, and designers have their dreams come true. The last Sunday of February are the Academy Awards or The Oscars. To sum up the Oscars of 2016, one could pretty much say a few words- Mad Max Fury Road and Leonardo DiCaprio. Legendary actor Leonardo DiCaprio won his first Oscar and Mad Max Fury Road cleaned up. However, there were many other happenings tucked into the night. Let’s take a quick look back at the 2016 Oscars.
Leonardo DiCaprio finally won his first Oscar! DiCaprio won an Oscar for his role as the leading actor in The Revenant. This was a major event because many people have felt that DiCaprio has deserved an Oscar for quite some time now. Being nominated for his supporting role in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, DiCaprio nominated for an Oscar for the first time over a decade ago. When asked about DiCaprio’s first win Lacey Hall, senior, was quoted saying, “I’m really excited for him because he has deserved one for a long time now.”
Mad Max Fury Road pretty much dominated the 2016 Oscars. Winning so many awards, in fact, that the announcers began to chuckle when calling the movie’s name for awards. Mad Max Fury Road took home the oscars for Best Achievement in Film Editing, Best Achievement in Costume Design, Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Achievement in Sound Mixing, Best Achievement in Sound Editing, and Best Achievement in Production Design. So, like I said, Mad Max tore it up.
Chris Rock put on one heck of a show as the host of these Oscars. Chris was involved in various skits and clips that made fun of the fact that he is African American. Some people did feel it was racist, and they were upset at it, so there was some controversy about it. However, for the most part everyone loved Rock’s lively announcing and hilarious comments. When asked about Rock’s skits Josh Rockhill, sophomore, quoted that “I enjoyed it a lot!”
In addition to the awards mentioned above, the Oscar for Best Picture was awarded to Spotlight. Best Actress was awarded to Brie Larson for her role in Room, Mark Rylance was given the award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Bridge of Spies, and Alicia Vikander was given the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Danish Girl. So there you have it, a review of the eighty-eighth Academy Awards and boy they were quite a show!

Plane Debris Found
By: Dominick Runyon - March 11, 2016
On March 8, 2014 a plane, Malaysian MH370 airliner, completely vanished from radar and was never seen again. Of course, everyone has heard of this shocking incident. The plane was supposed to be going to Beijing from Malaysia; it had about 293 people on board. Massive search teams were sent to look for the plane, mainly focusing on an area of the ocean west from Australia. The search continued and nothing was found; no bodies and only a small amount of debris were found. A man known as Blaine Gibson, a lawyer from Seattle, found a piece of plane debris off Mozambique. The debris that were found belonged to e Boeing 777 plane, which was what the MH370 was, but the problem is that a Boeing 777 is one of the most common planes used for transport.
Many people are skeptical about if the debris actually belongs to Flight 370, but many people also think it could be the key to finding Flight 370 and discovering the mystery behind how it vanished. Although the plane vanished over a year ago, many people worldwide still show support for the friends and family of the lost passengers, and many people are still trying to search for the plane.

Neko Atsume: Kitty Collector
By: Lacey Hall - March 11, 2018
This Japanese game is very simple, all you do is buy some food and some toys, then leave them in your yard, and next time you come back to the app, there should be some cute cats in your yard. The app was released in English on October 30, 2015. There are currently 49 cats in the game to collect, and 17 are considered “rare.” These rare cats are parodies of celebrities, or just funny cats with puns for names. For example, there’s Lady Meow Meow (Lady Gaga), Mr. Meowgi (Mr. Miyagi), and Joe DiMeowgio (Joe DiMaggio) to name a few.
The game is free to play and has simple instructions, making it relaxing or just plain fun for the user. The Apple Store version of the game has great reviews, with users raving about how they love the variety of cats; their only wish is for more. Bree Nickols, senior, said “I would download and play the game because it seems cute and fun.” Tyler Schwartz, freshman, said “I would never download and play this game because it could not look dumber.” Well, Tyler, many disagree with you! Whatever your poison, this game is here for your enjoyment and relaxation.

Superbowl Sunday
By: Eli Smith - February 8, 2016
Sunday, February 6th was the 50th anniversary of the biggest American football event: The Super Bowl. Super Bowl 50 started off with announcing all of the past Super Bowl MVP’s. Then at 6:30 p.m., the Denver Broncos kicked off to the Carolina Panthers and the biggest game of the year began.
After the second quarter, the halftime show kicked off with many great performances. Coldplay kicked off the show with songs from their past albums, as well as songs from their new album. Beyonce and Bruno Mars also joined the stage, with Beyonce performing her new song “Formation.” The finale was Coldplay, Beyonce, and Bruno Mars singing together while a slideshow of old performances played. The show ended with the whole stadium holding up signs that spelled out “Believe in Love.”
After it was all over, the Broncos defeated the Panthers 24 to 10. Von Miller, a Broncos linebacker, got MVP for his forced fumbles and great defense. This year's super bowl was good from start, to the commercials and halftime, to the very end.

North Korean Satellite
By: Dominick Runyon - February 8, 2016
The biggest event of the year so far for many U.S. citizens was Super Bowl 50, which consisted of the Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers. However, while most of the U.S. was distracted by the game, North Korea was busy with their own plans. On Sunday, February 7, 2016 North Korea launched a carrier rocket, which was reportedly just a satellite. North Korean officials told the public that the rocket launch was only for peaceful and scientific protests, much suspicion came about especially because of the report of North Korea testing a hydrogen bomb. That same Sunday, UN officials met to discuss the rocket test. Members of the UN Security Council strongly condemned the launch and stated that a threat to international peace continues to exist.
It is unknown what the real purpose of the rocket launch was for, but evidence that the rocket was launched is clear. Sunday night new objects appeared in Earth’s orbit; it was believed that the two objects were infact the North Korean satellite and the final stage of the rocket booster. Many people began to worry after the rocket was launched because the type of rocket was similar to the rockets many countries use to launch warheads, primarily the ones the U.S. used during the Cold War with Russia. Currently the satellite doesn’t seem to pose any real threat, but many countries are still on high alert.

Valentine's Day
By: Eli Smith - February 8, 2016
February 14th marks the day full of love and chocolate, and even depression. It is the day that couples celebrate their relationship. Americans spend a lot of money on this day, and many people plan on getting engaged.
Valentine's day is just around the corner, so many Americans will overspend on their significant others. On average. an American spends $17.3 Billion on Valentine's day. Men spend on average $130 on Valentines.
What is a better day than Valentine’s to propose to your significant other? “The AmEx poll also estimated that of the 13 million Americans getting engaged this year, 6 million will be proposed to, or plan to propose, on Valentine's Day.”
So, this Valentine’s day, if you have a significant other, overspend and spoil them or maybe even pop the question.

Row to Victory
By: Josh Rockhill - February 8, 2016
Four British women had spent nine months rowing a boat for over 8,000 miles with two hour shifts. They had no toilet and with only an hour-and-half nap at a time. The four women had completed their little trip across the Pacific Ocean on Monday after rowing about 8,500 miles from San Francisco to Cairns, Australia. They had no crew on their trip and only had stopped twice. The only places they had stopped was in Hawaii and Samoa for any repairs and supplies that were needed. The team hopes to raise $356,000 for Walking With the Wounded and Breast Cancer Care.
One of their blog's posts the members of the Coxless Crew team said that they were focused only on the final 20 miles. One of the crew members said, "It's fair to say that with physical exhaustion, sleep deprivation and a lack of (savory) food we are being tested to our limits,"
The team had wrote , "However this is where we draw on our SPIRIT, row hard, row strong, row together."
The rowers have been videotaping their journey, and that footage will be part of a documentary "Losing Sight of Shore" by filmmaker Sarah Moshman. (https://www.facebook.com/LosingSightofShore/)

Hawaii: A Popular Vacation Spot
By: Lacey Hall - February 8, 2016
In hopes that spring will come early this year, I decided to look up some facts about Hawaii since it’s a popular vacation spot for many people.
Altogether, Hawaii sounds like a great place to visit. If you ever get the chance, don't miss out on this opportunity.
- Hawaii was the 50th state to join the union on August 21st, 1959.
- It is the only state to grow coffee.
- The state is composed of eight main islands: Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, and the Big Island.
- There are only 12 letters in the Hawaiian alphabet: A, E, H, I, K, L, M, N, O, P, U, and W.
- Each island has a flower and a color to represent it.

New Dinosaur Found
By: Dominick Runyon - February 8, 2016
In 2014 a team of excavators went into the Patagonian desert in Argentina. The team was on their site for nearly 18 months when they uncovered a new species of dinosaur. The skeleton of the dinosaur was dug-up and now stands in the American Museum of Natural HIstory. The dinosaur is a measured 122 feet long, and doesn’t completely fit in the gallery at the museum, it had to be extended through the passageway to make it fit. The skeleton of the dinosaur is approximately 30 feet longer than that of a Blue Whale. Currently the dinosaur is considered to be part of the Titanosaur group because of its characteristics. Titanosaurs are said to be giant lizard like creatures, they have long necks, whip-like tails, small heads, and walk on all four legs. Chairman and Macaulay Curator of the museum Mark Norell stated the the species is so new that a specific scientific name has not been given yet.

Ebola Plasma
By: Josh Rockhill - February 8, 2016
An Ebola treatment in the blood doesn't end up working or helping the victims. When Ebola victims were treated with blood plasma that was donated by Ebola had ended up failing had increased the odds of getting recovered from Ebola, this was a failed testing of the treatment when they were experimenting. This was based off some cases with 84 people that was treated with the plasma In Conakry, Guinea, they hoped that the antibodies in the plasma would have helped prevent and fight off the virus the same way that the donors that had survived the virus.
People that were treated with this plasma death rate was 31 percent, compared to 38 percent of people in a control group with 418 people treated at the same medical center who didn't get this plasma. When the reachers adjusted some factors that might help the survivors like their age, the effect of the therapy was even less effective. So is this plasma worth it, or is it worth trying to keep testing people with Ebola?

The film is the 7th in the franchise, and the first in the sequel trilogy. The film introduces many new characters, one of which being Rey: a scavenger girl living on the desert planet of Jakku. The plot centers around Rey, Finn (a former First Order Stormtrooper), Han Solo, and Chewbacca, as they work to return the BB-8 droid to the resistance and find Luke Skywalker.
The film also introduces a new group of main antagonists, including Kylo Ren, General Hux, Captain Phasma, and Supreme Leader Snoke. Kylo Ren is the commander of the First Order (a massive army determined to destroy the last Jedi Luke Skywalker, and bring an end to the Resistance), and the son of Han Solo and Leia Organa. He works alongside Phasma and Hux. Not much is known about Snoke at the moment.
The republic is destroyed by the First Order’s massive superweapon known as Starkiller Base. Aided by the resistance, Finn, Han, and Chewy carry out a mission to infiltrate the Starkiller Base, and destroy it. Han is killed in the process by Kylo Ren. Finn is struck down by Ren, and Rey takes her place as the main protagonist in the movie by using the force to take Luke’s lightsaber and fight back against Kylo Ren.
The movie ends with Snoke requesting that Hux return to him with Kylo Ren to complete his training, and with Rey finding Luke Skywalker, and holding his lightsaber out to him.
Episode 8 was set to be released early in 2017, but has been pushed back 7 months passed the due date. With the success of this film, it is highly recommended that everyone go watch the Episode 8 when it comes out, and if you haven’t yet, go watch Episode 7. It’s worth it.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens premiered on December 18, 2015 in North America. The movie broke many box office records, including highest grossing opening of all time, and the fastest to reach $1 billion dollars in revenue. It soared to the top of the list, passing Avatar and Titanic to become the highest grossing movie for the all-time U.S. box office and was number three for the all-time worldwide box office.

ISIS Update
By: Dominick Runyon - January 18, 2016
One of the most common topics popping up in the news over the past few years is ISIS. The Islamic terrorist group responsible for much of the most recent terrorist attacks in multiple different countries. ISIS has many goals, and has came close to completing a lot of those. Currently ISIS holds a lot of area between Iran and Syria, land that ISIS has taken by fighting. Many countries are working to fight ISIS, and have been working for a very long time.
A study was taken that shows that over the past 21 months, ISIS has killed nearly 19,000 civilians and about 36,245 were injured, which is considered by many as genocide. The scariest part is that the report states that those numbers could be higher than estimated. It was also estimated that about 3,500 civilians are being held as slaves, and between 800-900 children have been abducted by the group for religious education and military training. The report also listed many ways ISIS has killed civilians, beheadings and suicide bombings being the most talked about in the news. After reading the numbers and the tactics, the report finally states that ISIS has, and still continues to abuse the international human rights law and humanitarian law. It is also said the ISIS has been charged for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and even genocide.
The fight against ISIS, and terrorism in general, still continues today. ISIS still remains confident and still fights for what it believes, meaning they could kill even more people within the year.

North Korean Advancements
By: Dominick Runyon - December 7, 2015
Militaries, the most important people to a country. Every day a country's military works to defend the country from a global threat. North Korea has a massive military. It is estimated that North Korea has about 1.2 million active soldiers, and about 7.7 million in the reserve army; that adds up to nearly 9 million soldiers that defend North Korea, not including their 200,000 special forces troops. Because of the size of their military, North Korea likes to threaten other countries with all-out war. However, the question is: can they actually last if they go to war? They have a massive number of people to fight for them, but do they have the appropriate weapons? North Korea has a massive weapons stash; they have a collection of nearly 8,600 artillery cannons, 4,300 tanks, nearly 820 fighter jets, and about 80 submarines. The problem is that they are old weapons. North Korean tanks are so old that they were used during the Soviet Union era; their fighter jets are similar to the jets the U.S. used during the Vietnam war. The reason North Korea has so many weapons in their stash is because they are cheap. Cheap weapons allows North Korea to mass purchase weapons to support all of their soldiers. The problem is that the cheap weapons and the age of the weapons makes them not very good, meaning they are less effective in war than newer weapons. This also means that even though North Korea has an overwhelming military size, all major countries, like the U.S., France and even Great Britain, have major advantages because of the newer technologies the major countries have.
News out of North Korea on Thursday could forever change this. On Thursday, December 10, state news announced that North Korea now has the capability to make a hydrogen bomb. For those who do not know what a hydrogen bomb is exactly, a hydrogen bomb or thermonuclear bomb is capable of creating an explosion a hundred times more powerful than the atom bomb, making it the most dangerous weapon known to man. It has been known that North Korea has been able to produce the atom bomb, but the hydrogen bomb is a major breakthrough for them. How is this bad news for us? North Korea has an unknown number of nuclear weapons; they could have millions. Every missile they have has the capability to reach the U.S. coast if launched, which is why the U.S. has been highly concerned with North Korea lately. If North Korea really has a hydrogen bomb, then the U.S. would have a horrible situation if North Korea decides to launch the bomb. There is, however, good news; North Korea is broke. It is said that if North Korea goes to war, they would only be able to wage war for a few days unless another country were to help fund them. North Korea continues to become a global nuclear danger, and their advancements in weapon research continues to alarm other countries worldwide.

New Year's Resolutions
By: Taylor Kelley - December 7, 2015
Do you want to lose weight? Eat healthier? Maybe even spend less money this year? New Year’s resolutions can be difficult and hard to keep. “But for all the good intentions, only a tiny fraction of us keep our resolutions; University of Scranton research suggests that just 8% of people achieve their New Year’s goals” (Forbes).
If you want to actually make a New Year’s resolution, you should try to make it something small and simple. For example, if you want to start drinking more water, you should start off by drinking only a cup more than usual. Then gradually work your way up to your goal. Don’t make it so that you have to follow the resolution every single day because it doesn’t work when you try to do something like that.
If you want to start working out; start with a few exercises, then add one onto it everyday. You’d be surprised how much better this works then if you try following it like you’re supposed too.

Beijing's Conditions Worsen: Closes School, Cuts Traffic
By: Lacey Hall - December 7, 2015
On Tuesday, the Chinese capital called for a shutdown after there was a red alert issued for pollution. The Beijing Municipal Bureau of Environmental Protection said the alert would last for several days. The air quality index measured at 250 on Tuesday morning, which is “very unhealthy” on the chart.
The smog affects everyone. CNN interviewed Gao Yunli, 35, and she said it makes her life very difficult. She “can no longer go out on weekends or to outdoor supermarkets if the air is bad.” Car use is being cut in half, while heavy vehicles are banned completely. Polluting activities such as barbecuing and fireworks have also been banned for the remainder of the alert.
China is the world’s largest greenhouse gas producer, which comes from burning coal to heat homes or fuel power plants; with winter coming quickly, this usage is expected to increase. China hopes to cut their carbon footprint by at least half by the year 2030. It wouldn’t only be good for the country but good for the earth as well.

Santa's Horned Helper: The Story of Krampus
By: Aurelian Greeno - December 7, 2015
One of the newest box office hits is Krampus, directed by Michael Dougherty. The plot is based around a man who’s dysfunctional family visits on christmas. When his family begins fighting, the man loses his faith in Christmas. The lack of Christmas spirit attracts the demonic force known as Krampus.
The legend of Krampus was first started in Germany. Krampus is best described as a half-goat, half-demon, who beats people into being nice instead of naughty. Krampus is known as “anti-claus” and contrary to Santa, who rewards good children with toys, he beats children who are bad and then sends them to the underworld.

Christmas Around the World
By: Morgan Bretz - December 7, 2015
Many people celebrate Christmas differently around the world. As everyone knows, Christmas is December 25th, but some may celebrate it on a different day. For example, Russian and Ukrainian Christmas is celebrated on the 7th of January. They celebrate it on this unusual date because the Orthodox church uses the old ‘Julian’ calendar for religious celebration days. What they do for celebrating Christmas is they have a special prayers.
In Ireland, they say that it is traditional to leave mince pies and and a bottle of Guinness out for a snack. A Christmas tradition for Spain, Portugal, and Italy is to set up a model village of Bethlehem. Finally, the way that most people celebrate Christmas from where we are, is spending time with your family and friends and giving each other presents. I also think that celebrating Christmas is better when it is snowing because it makes it look more like Christmas and it makes everyone more into the Christmas spirit.

French Disaster
By: Dominick Runyon - November 12, 2015
13 November, 2015, a usual quiet night all throughout France and the rest of the world. As many citizens of France head out to enjoy themselves on a peaceful night, other people had different plans for that Friday. Three groups of terrorists attacked six different locations throughout the French capital of Paris; some of those locations included a concert hall, the Stade de France, and at least two different restaurants. An estimated 129 citizens were killed on Friday, and about 352 citizens were injured; 99 were injured severely. Among the 129 French citizens killed, 7 terrorists were also killed. ISIS said that 8 terrorists were involved. On Monday, November 16, French president Francois Hollande addressed a joint session of French Parliament at Versailles; it was the third time since 1848 the meeting occurred. After the attacks Francois Hollande ordered a state or emergency, tightened border control, increased security, and ordered 1,500 military troops to join the increased security force. The French air force carried out bombing runs over Raqqa, the ISIS capital, on Sunday and Monday. It was said that this was the deadliest event to happen in France since World War II.
Although the attacks were in Paris, it still has an effect on the entire world. Prior to the attacks on Friday, Islam shared information that ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi ordered attacks on countries fighting ISIS. Israel also statedthey stand “shoulder-to-shoulder with France. The entire world stood by France on Friday, and continue to do so. On Friday and Saturday night many of the world's most famous buildings such as the Empire State Building, and the Sydney Opera House shined with the French colors to show solidarity with the city of Paris and the victims of the attacks. Social media has launched a heavy campaign for the victims of the attacks. Facebook users throughout the world have temporarily changed their profile pictures due to a new setting given to them. Many of the profile pictures can now be seen with hues of the French flag overlapping their current picture, this is to show support for the French. Facebook users in Paris can also mark that they are safe and notify friends/family. Another big tool is on twitter, people can use #rechercheparis to look for missing loved ones and, due to president Hollande urging people to stay in doors, people looking for shelter and refuge in Paris can use #porteouverte to locate people willing to open their homes to the people in need.
As names of victims continue to emerge, the whole world stands by the people of France and continues to help remember those lost on that horrific day.

Conditions in Parts of China Horrid Due to Pollution
By: Lacey Hall - November 12, 2015
Today in certain parts of China, the haze is so bad that visibility is less than 500 meters. On Sunday, the pollution levels were so high that planes had to be landed and large highways were closed because of it. There were at least 86 flights landed on Monday by 8 a.m.
Many parts of Asia are no strangers to air pollution, as face masks are sold in stores and on the streets. This rise in pollution resulted in all face masks sold out, which caused many residents to retreat to hospitals.
The picture below is of residents in Zhugao, Sichuan looking at their polluted river. The conditions in Asia are very bad in many areas, and little things are done, if at all, to clean up the pollution. In some areas, the smog is so bad that many people cannot make it to a local hospital for treatment. In some research done by the World Health Organization (WHO), if Asia invested $215 billion annually, they could reduce air pollution, increase productivity, and save countless people from respiratory problems. Maybe in the near future, Asia will put this plan into action for the better.

Oregon Shooting Survivor: "The Lucky One"
By: Dominick Runyon - October 26, 2015
October 1, 2015, a normal day for many on the Umpqua Community College campus. This is not true for a group of unlucky students seated in their classroom. About 30-40 minutes after the class had finally began, gunfire erupted inside a large classroom. The shooter, who was identified as Christopher Harper-Mercer, ordered everyone to the ground, and everyone obeyed. One student, known to friends and family as Matthew Downing, told CNN that after the gunfire started he couldn’t hear anything due to his ears ringing. “I listened and figured that if I did so throughout I wouldn’t be harmed” Downing told reporters. Downing also told the reporters that the most of the students were in the middle of the room, and the gunman walked over to a desk and placed a backpack on it. The gunman then proceeded to pull out an envelope; Downing explained that the envelope held a flash-drive.
“He looked at me and said ‘hey kid with the glasses, you are the lucky one, I will not shoot you if you give this to the cops,’” Matthew had told reporters “This is the moment I thought I was going to die.” Downing then told reporters that he stood up, and the gunman aimed the gun at Downing. Harper-Mercer then told Downing to proceed to the back of the room and take a seat facing him. Matthew then told reporters shocking news. Matthew stated that the shooter had asked a student to stand up, then asked that student if he was religious. The student responded stating he was a Christian; Christopher shot him. Christopher did this with another student who said he was Catholic. After shooting the two religious students, Christopher took random shots at people who were still laying on the ground. Downing was also hit, and then shot the teacher. Eventually after the police showed up Christopher took random shots outside the window, reloaded his handgun, then had a shootout with the police until Christopher was eventually shot by law enforcement. While laying on the ground, wounded by the gunshot wound, Christopher Harper-Mercer took his own life, bringing the event to an end.
"The final thing I want to add is ... that any day could be your last," Downing said in his last statement to reporters. "You don't want anybody's last memory of you to be a bad one so everybody needs to take it upon themselves to just be a lot nicer to people."

Amusement Park Accidents
By: Lacey Hall - October 26, 2015
Amusement parks are always a great thrill for people these days, but have you ever wondered what kind of history they have? If there have ever been any serious accidents that could cause you to stray? I did some research, and I found some of the worst accidents in history.
In 1972, the Battersea Park’s biggest attraction was a wooden roller coaster called The Big Dipper. The park is located in south London, England. As the roller coaster was being pulled up the first hill, the chain snapped and sent the coaster flying backwards, which caused five children to pass away.
On June 9, 1991, at our own King’s Island in Mason, Ohio, a man fell into a pond and two others jumped in to help him. The pond was electrified due to a mechanical problem at the bottom of the pond. The shock killed the two men who jumped in to help the third. Later that day, 32 year old Candy Taylor fell from Flight Commander and died from the impact.
There is an amusement park in New Jersey called Action Park that has quite the reputation. In the history of the park, there has been three drownings, an electrocution, and a heart attack that was brought on by park conditions. Due to lawsuits, Action Park was closed down and reopened under new owners.
It makes us wonder, how many safety checks do roller coasters go through? We trust these people with our safety, so we hope they do everything they can to make sure the rides run smoothly.

How Music Affects People
By: Lacey Hall - October 6, 2015
According to a study done in August of 2014, music has positive effects on the body. It relieves feelings of distress. Music is used in hospitals during childbirth. It also reduces blood pressure, and it speeds up post-stroke recovery. Listening to just 30 minutes of classical music lowers high blood pressure significantly. The tempo of music is also good for the heart, which was found by researchers. Music is also found to boost immunity. This is great research towards how music affects people.
I sat down with Eli Smith, who told me his favorite type of music to listen to is gospel. When I asked him if he agrees with this study, he told me “oh yes, indeed.” Morgan Bretz’s favorite music to listen to is today’s hits, which ranges from artists like Adam Levine and Rihanna. Even though we all enjoy different music, it’s always good to know that the time we spend with music can positively affect our health.

Jail Break
By: Josh Rockhill - October 6, 2015
Earlier last Sunday a man named Justin Kenstner escaped from his A-cell. He was convicted of armed robbery. He escaped from a high security prison in Iowa City, Iowa. He was sneaking through the building’s piping onto the roof, then guiding himself to the ground with a makeshift rope. Justin Kenstner was found 100 miles away near Geneseo, Illinois. An Illinois trooper found him walking on the side of Highway 82.
The cell he was in was a max security where he was locked in a cell 23 hours a day and only got one hour of being in the yard where he could exercise. He had taken the screws out of his shower inside his cell and that led to some pipes he could get through. Then he went to the roof taking a man made rope to get over the wall. This is important because we don’t know if someone else will be able to accomplish this or if the prisons will try harder to make security better. Escapes like this need to be avoided in the future.

This is important because we don’t know if someone else will be able to accomplish this or if the prisons will try harder to make security better. Escapes like this need to be avoided in the future.

Homo Naledi: Our Possible Ancestors
By: Dominick Runyon - September 28, 2015
Rising Star Cave: most people of South Africa see this cave as just an everyday limestone cave. However, in 2013 an amateur caver and university geologist Lee Berger arrived at Berger’s house one night carrying a fragment of a jawbone in their hands. Lee Berger is a professor at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. Berger has uncovered many major finds in his past, but he never knew that the single jawbone fragment he found in 2013 would forever change our understanding of the theory of mankind's evolution and raise more questions of our true identity. Berger and his team eventually returned to the cave, and announced that they may have found the newest addition to our family tree. The team is calling the new species the “Homo Naledi”; some key characteristics of the new species is a head that protects a brain no bigger than a modern orange. The average male skull of the new species is about half the size of a human skull. The Homo Naledi also have fingers that are locked into a curve, which signifies that they had climbing and tool using abilities. The species also had an average height of 5ft, with long legs and feet similar to human feet, signifying that they may have had the ability to walk long distances.
The team also says the species appears to have buried its dead. Burying the dead of a species is a characteristic that was originally believed to only belong to humans, and the first account of human burial was believed to be over 100,000 years ago. Berger says that the cave, which lies 30 meters underground in what is known as the Cradle of Humanity world heritage site, is a burial ground and the Homo Naledi used fire to light their way. Berger stated there was no damage from predators, and there is no sign of a catastrophe, which led Berger to the conclusion that the Homo Naledi had deliberately disposed of their dead in the chamber, although the reason is still unclear. So far the team has uncovered over 15 full bodied skeletons of the Homo Naledi, some belonging to what they say are infants, teenagers, and some elderly members of the Homo Naledi community. The team is unclear of what they will find in the days to come, and they don’t know how long it will be until we finally uncover the secrets behind the Homo Naledi, but Berger said he thinks there are still hundreds, maybe thousands, of Homo Naledi remains still inside the cave.

Law Enforcement's Mascot
By: Lacey Hall - September 28, 2015
Did you know the German Shepherds are one of the most popular and recognizable breeds of the AKC? This breed was first recognized in 1908. They come in 11 colors, and they are energetic and loving breeds. German Shepherds are known for being very fond of children once there’s an established relationship. They can reach high speeds, which is why they are recruited as police dogs.
German Shepherds are derived from herding dogs and farm dogs. They reached many different parts of the world in 1914. This breed is distinguished for loyalty, courage, and understanding a number of special services, for example, police dogs, service dogs, obedience dogs, and sentinels. It is a widely known breed, and perhaps a favorite of America.

Virginia Shooting Affects Mr. Robot Finale
By: Dominick Runyon - September 14, 2015
Last Wednesday, a reporter by the name of Alison Parker and cameraman Adam Ward were shot to death on live TV. The two colleagues worked at the WDBJ-TV station in Franklin County, Virginia. Their killer was a former employee at the same TV station; the killer's name is Vester L. Flanagan II. Flanagan was a former television reporter under the name of Bryce Williams. Along with killing the reporter and the cameraman, Flanagan also injured a woman who was being interviewed on air. After the shooting, Flanagan, who fled the scene immediately, later shot and killed himself. Although the shooting affects the families and friends of the victims, it also has its toll on other TV events.
One example is the critically acclaimed TV show known as “Mr.Robot”, which airs on USA Network. The show has recently reached the end of its first season. For those who do not know about the TV show, it is about a mentally unstable computer programmer who becomes a computer hacker. The show stars actors such as Rami Malek and Christian Slater. The USA Network says the show’s finale was canceled because it contains a scene similar to the shooting in Virginia. USA Network canceled the show as a way to show the public their respect and sorrow for the victims, and the respect for their viewers as well. The network hopes that the families and friends of the victims stay well during their time of despair and wishes to show the families their sorrow. The finale is now scheduled to air Wednesday, September 2nd, at 10 p.m.

Teen Pressures Boyfriend Into Suicide
By: Aurelian Greeno - September 14, 2015
Michelle Carter is a teenager from Massachusetts who is currently on trial for encouraging her boyfriend to commit suicide through text messages. Carter’s boyfriend, Conrad Roy III, died last year from self-induced carbon monoxide poisoning. Carter allegedly encouraged Roy to go through with killing himself, using such phrases as “You can’t think about it,” and “You just have to do it,”. The phrases are seen in a series of text message conversations between Carter and Roy. Roy had suffered from depression and also attempted suicide once before. (Fox News)
According to members of Roy’s family, they believed Roy was finally coming out of his depression and was seemingly getting better in the time before his death. The following text was sent by Carter to a friend in the days following Roy’s death: "...his death is my fault like honestly I could have stopped him I was on the phone with him and he got out of the car because it was working and he got scared and I (expletive) told him to get back in ... because I knew he would do it all over again the next day and I couldn't have him live the way he was living anymore I couldn't do it I wouldn't let him,". (Fox News)
The attorney representing Carter in this case had this to say about the charges and the case: “He got the generator, he devised the plan and he had to go find a spot. He parked, he had to get the gas for the generator, he had to turn the generator on, he had to sit in that car for a long period of time. He caused his own death,". (Fox News)
We interviewed a student about her views on the case. Here is what they had to say:
“I completely agree with the charges placed on Michelle. I think if she wouldn’t have pressured Roy into going through with it so many times, he wouldn’t have commit suicide. “It seemed as though he knew he didn’t want to, but she insisted, per say,” said Andrea Roddy.
Carter has been charged with involuntary manslaughter as of 9/9/2015, and the trial will continue.

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula
By: Dominick Runyon - August 28, 2015
North and South Korea exchanged gunfire at their heavily fortified border in the afternoon of Thursday, August 20, 2015. It was said the conflict started on August 4th, after North Korea planted land mines in the “demilitarized zone”, which resulted in two South Korean soldiers getting wounded. After the landmine incident, South Korea acted by blasting propaganda over the border by using multiple loudspeakers. The move infuriated North Korean people and it resulted in North Korean troops firing two shells towards one of the South Korean speakers, South Korea then fired multiple shells back at North Korea. Eventually, around 5 p.m. local time, North Korea sent a message to Seoul, threatening that military action would be used if South Korea doesn’t stop the propaganda within 48 hours and remove the loudspeakers. After the firefight, North Korean president Kim Jong Un has ordered his front line troops to enter a “wartime state”. North Korean Troops were ordered to remain on guard, and North Korean troops presence at the border has been significantly increased. South Korean troops have entered a “semi-war state” meaning they are running military drills with the U.S. and other countries, but are not directly preparing for a conflict with the North. North Korea says that the military drills with the U.S. is a prelude to an invasion.
This is not the first time the two Koreas have had conflict with each other. in November of 2010, North Korea shelled an island near the country's “maritime border”, which killed two South Korean troops. Also, in 2014, two patrol boats in the Yellow Sea exchanged fire, and then a few days after a conflict arose on land. Luckily for the U.S., it has been predicted that the conflict between the two countries may not escalate any further, Jamie Metzl, an Asia expert on the Atlantic Council in New York, says that “North Korea has more to gain in a theatrical conflict than a real conflict that may expose its fundamental weakness.”, The pentagon has been monitoring the conflict to make sure it does not escalate any further. Although it has been stated by multiple sources that there may not be a major conflict, South Korea, which hosts almost 28,000 U.S. soldiers, says that they will be on high alert after the exchange of fire.
